Annual General Meeting
Delta Community Music Society

The Annual General Meeting of the Delta Community Music Society will be Sunday December 13th, at 2 pm.

This year it will be held virtually and you will be required to register for the meeting to ensure your attendance so that we have a quorum.

Look for more details here soon.

Registration now Open for Summer

Registration is now Open for Summer and Fall registration 2020. At the moment lessons are continuing in an online format with the possibility of in-person lessons on some instruments coming this September. The school will be releasing a COVID-19 safety plan as soon as we can within the next week or two, and it will appear on our website.

Student and faculty safety is our foremost concern. Our online program that has been running since the end of March 2020 has for the most part been very effective for the majority of our students and faculty. Around the world, online education has proven to be a viable education alternative, especially with one-to-one instruction.

Hello to our Students and Faculty.

As you know our scholarship auditions and final recitals will be virtual this year. Students who wish to take part in this please contact your teacher if you have not been in touch with your teacher about this process all ready. All students who take part in this do so at the recommendation of your teacher, as in previous years.

All video submissions are due by June 5th. I will confirm each submission after that date before they go on to the adjudicator.

Your teacher will be in contact with you about the process for submission, if you are recommended by your teacher to take part in this.

If you are continuing into post secondary studies in music in the fall (into a Bachelor of Music program in some specialty (instrumental, voice, Music Therapy, etc or general studies) then you may apply for the Kennel Scholarship. Please let your teacher know if you want to be considered for this.

Good luck everyone,
DCMS Music Director.

Update – July 30, 2020

Hello to our students and families of DCMS.
The first drafts of our reopening plan for the music school and our COVID-19 response plan have now been approved by the City of Delta. There are now new protocols and procedures in place for anyone entering into the building for any reason. I am in the process of creating a new website for the school which will be published later in August, so for now I will list all of the documents here.

Anyone teaching or taking lessons at the school will have to sign the informed consent form. This will be emailed out to all building users (including faculty, volunteers, and staff) and it will become part of the terms and conditions that you will agree to before your lessons resume in our fall term in September.

When we do open in September the school will remain closed to the public. All waiting areas in the school are now permanently closed. Students will be escorted in and out of the school by their teacher at the beginning and end of their lesson time. There will be strict protocols in place for social distancing, usage of masks, sanitization, and cleaning before and after every lesson.

Daily, upon entry to the school, everyone who enters must fill out this form and the student’s temperature will be taken.

Our COVID-19 response plan – All students, parents, faculty, staff, and volunteers must follow these guidelines. These are not optional.

These are living documents and will be updated as the summer progresses.

Regards, Stephen
Music Director, DCMS

UPDATE: July 2, 2020

Hello to our students and families of DCMS.
We hope you have enjoyed Canada Day and you are all safe and well. The staff and Board of Directors are currently working on a reopening plan for the school. We hope to have the first draft of our COVID-19 safety plans and protocols in place at the school starting by mid to late July. As we have now entered into our Province’s Stage 3 of reopening we are working to bring back in-person lessons in a graduated format starting this fall.

To date, all of our in-person summer programs have been canceled, including the South Delta Jazz Festival, Thrive City String Boot Camps, (as the province is not allowing overnight camps at this time), and the Drum Workshop (as our borders are closed). Private lessons continue in an online-only format for the time being. We will have one or two private lessons happening in person to test protocols for fall during this summer. Private lessons will return in a graduated fashion beginning with cello, and piano. Voice lessons and any group in-person activities with voice are at the moment considered to be unsafe and we will not have in-person voice lessons taking place take until the final stages of returning to in-person lessons. We are developing our plans in conjunction with guidelines from the City of Delta, Worksafe BC, the Province of BC, and consultation with the BC Community Music School Association and the Western Conference of Conservatory Schools in Canada. Our plan will be published on our site in the coming weeks.

UPDATE: May 8, 2020

Hi, all students and families of Delta Community Music School.
We hope you are all staying safe and healthy during this time. We have made the decision not to resume in-person lessons at the Delta Community Music School for the remainder of the 2019-2020 session. At this time we will be continuing with online classes only.

For those students who did not want to do online lessons or had instructors that did not continue with online lessons you will receive an email with the credit amount of your unused tuition and an option to receive a refund or apply the credit to the tuition for our 2020-2021 session.

We will take this time to come up with the solutions for the new 2020-2021 session which starts September 8th, 2020. We will do everything we can to ensure the student’s health and safety as we all come back together.

If you have any questions you can call or email to the office during regular office hours and we will be glad to help you.

UPDATE March 26, 2020

Hello Delta Community Music School Parents, Guardians, and Students,

First and most importantly, we hope you are all healthy and staying safe.
At this time we have made the decision to close the school indefinitely. That means there will be no public access to the school at this time. We will be working in the next couple of weeks to enable the continuation of your lessons virtually. Your instructor will be reaching out to you about the possibility of continuing your lessons online as soon as they are set up.

As we have no solid information on how long the school will be closed or if students will be continuing their learning online we will hold off on offering refunds until we have more information. We will be waving the 15-day notice of termination policy that we currently have in place effective immediately.

If you pay your fees monthly we will not be depositing the April 1st cheques until we know if lessons will be continuing. Once we have confirmation from the instructor that you are continuing online we will deposit those cheques.
We will also be updating our website and sending out emails as more information becomes available to us.

Thank you for your patience as we work through the challenges facing us all.

UPDATE March 21, 2020

A lot has changed in the past few days with the virus and how our community is responding. At this time Delta Community Music School has suspended all group classes and we asking our teachers to move all private lessons to an online format for the time being as we deem it not to be safe to have a continuous stream of clients, students and teachers coming into our school. Our school office will open Monday March 30 and we will have regular office hours moving forward but students will not be coming to the school for lessons or classes until further notice.

Please understand public safety is our number one priority, and all of the non-profit schools have reached this same decision and have closed for the time being. There are some private teachers out there still teaching in their homes, etc. They are putting themselves and their students at risk by doing so.

UPDATE: March 12, 2020

To our members,

With growing global concerns around COVID-19 (“coronavirus”), We wanted to provide you with an update on our response to date and our commitment to you moving forward. The health, safety, and well-being of our staff and students is our top priority and we are following the lead of Canadian public health authorities at this important time.

First and foremost, we are taking all appropriate measures to ensure our school and the classrooms are safe and that we have existing plans in place to ensure they stay that way. While the Public Health Agency of Canada has assessed the current public health risk associated with coronavirus as low, we continue to monitor for developments very closely

We have implemented additional measures to ensure your safety as well as the safety of our staff, including:

  • enhanced cleaning protocols including a deep cleaning of the school over the spring break
  • Increasing communications and reminders on important health and safety measures

To protect yourself and others, we ask that you use preventive measures outlined below.

For individuals, good respiratory etiquette and hand hygiene behaviours include:

  • Washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (if soap and water are not available)
  • Not sharing food or utensils with others
  • Using proper coughing or sneezing etiquette (cough/sneeze into elbow or tissue, not hand)
  • Staying home when sick

Again, we continue to monitor this situation closely and will provide ongoing updates as needed. We also encourage our members to stay up-to-date through Canada’s Public Health website.
